How To Live To Be 101

Live to 101According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are about 500,000 centenarians in the world, and almost 100,000 in the United States. And the population is rapidly growing. The agency projects by 2050 there will be 1.1 million centenarians in America alone. Meanwhile, researchers at Boston University predict there will be even more, estimating some 3 million baby boomers will live to be 100 or older.

This begs the question: How can you live healthfully into your 100s? Experts say having good genes is half the battle, but lifestyle clearly contributes too. ForbesWoman asked current 100-year-olds to share their secrets for healthy living. Medical professionals insist that beginning these practices early can easily add decades to your lifetime--though it's never too late to start.

You Are What You Eat
Daisy McFadden, a longtime resident of the Bronx, N.Y., will celebrate her 100th birthday this November. Still active and alert, she believes her eating habits have greatly contributed to her longevity. For years she's eaten a breakfast of oatmeal, cranberry juice and a banana. For lunch she usually has a salad with beets, cucumbers, tomatoes and either chicken or fish. Dinner is a plate of steamed vegetables and lean meat. Fresh fruit often follows for dessert.

Her diet resembles that of the people of Okinawa, Japan, a community with the world's largest concentration of healthy centenarians. The Okinawa diet is high in grains, vegetables and fish. It's low in eggs, dairy and meat. Okinawans also drink a lot of water.

"I don't drink soda at all, and never have," says McFadden, a retired nurse. Instead she opts for milk, water, juice or iced tea. She doesn't drink alcohol much anymore, but says that throughout her life she occasionally had a glass of wine or a Bloody Mary.

McFadden's doctor, David Prince, M.D., director of cardiac recovery at Montefiore Medical Center in New York, says McFadden is doing it right. "There is not enough fiber or vegetables in the American diet," he says. "If you eat more fiber, fruits and vegetables, it will push out the bad stuff." Plus, Prince agrees that just about anything is better than soda--including diet soda--and notes that studies show having two to three alcoholic drinks a week can extend your life.

Got a perpetual sweet tooth? Don't despair. Occasionally indulging will keep a smile on your face well into old age. McFadden says she can't live without chocolate chip cookies and eats them regularly. Louis Sussman, 101, has eaten a scoop of chocolate ice cream almost every day for as long he can remember, and Viola Crowson, 100, breaks up a steady diet of lean meats and leafy greens with the occasional brownie or a Hardy's hamburger.

"It's important not to feel deprived," Prince says. "Have a treat once or twice a week, but maintain portion control. The simplest rule is to split what you like with a friend."

Simple Exercise Makes a Difference
"If you want to live to be 101, you have to live an active life both mentally and physically, and you do not want to be overweight," says Eric Rackow, M.D., professor of medicine at New York University and chief executive of at-home health care provider SeniorBridge.

Crowson, who lives in Alabama, says she gets fully dressed every morning. She doesn't take any prescription drugs, still cooks for herself--three squares a day--and keeps her house immaculate. She busies herself with chores like raking leaves, vacuuming and scrubbing dishes, and every two weeks gets a manicure and a haircut. For most of her life, and well into her 90s, she walked to and from church every week. Now she does daily stretching exercises to keep her muscles strong and flexible.

McFadden also enjoys regular exercise. As a New Yorker, she spent most of her life walking to work. Today she goes to her local senior center at least three times a week to walk on the treadmill, bicycle or use a rowing machine.

In South Carolina, Opal Prater, 99, enjoys Wii bowling, and Mary Richardson, 98, cares for all the indoor and outdoor plants in her retirement community on a daily basis. Harry Fox in California, 95, still likes to dance. And Elizabeth Louis of Maryland, 97, spends time working on her art.

Prince says that regular activity is one of the strongest predictors of a long, healthy life, and it doesn't have to entail gym visits. "Walk more, carry more and take the stairs," he advises.

Studies show that focused attention, like doing puzzles or reading, will help keep your mind young. Every day McFadden wakes up at 5 a.m., reads the newspaper and completes a crossword puzzle. Every evening she watches Jeopardy and plays along. Likewise, Sussman reads his newsweekly cover-to-cover every week. "People who have those lifelong interests have better mental faculties throughout their lives," Prince concludes.

Enjoy Yourself!
"We live in a stressful world," says Rackow. "You need to be able to take time for yourself and enjoy what you do."

For most of the pre-retirement population, that means reducing job stress and finding meaningful work. In Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Sussman looks back on his job change early in life. After working what he calls excruciatingly long days as a pharmacist and store owner, Sussman's wife suggested he do something more fun. So in 1946 he started his own business selling ice cream, a venture that was less stressful and more profitable. It allowed him more family time, and eventually the time and money to travel the world with his wife.

Which brings us to the next healthy-living staple: "Stay married," says Rackow. Studies show that married people live longer, healthier lives, which probably can be attributed to the psychological benefits of having close peer relationships. Experts agree that having good friends and family is key to reaching age 101.

Mary Malecha, 103, of Minnesota, has surrounded herself with friends her entire life. She says her fondest memories are from when she was 19 and recently married, spending most of her time with friends and at dances. For the next several decades she had a core group of girlfriends she could laugh with. She stills regularly visits with friends, playing games like Uno and Bingo. "I believe in being happy and enjoying life, and I love to be with other people," she says.

Malecha also keeps healthy spiritually; for her entire life she has prayed every morning and evening. In fact, a recent survey of centenarians by health care provider Evercare found that 62% of the 100-plus crowd prays, meditates or engages in another spiritual practice every day. Maintaining a positive attitude and taking time for introspection will increase your odds of long-term health.

And despite industries devoted to wrinkle creams and hair dyes, age is a blessing after all. McFadden says, "I don't fear age. If you don't get old, you die young."

Chaidir Anwar Tanjung - detikNews

Pekanbaru
- Gubernur Riau, Rusli Zaenal, mengharapkan cagar biosfer menjadi tujuan wisata dunia.

Ice Creams: The Creams of the Crop

Ice Creams: The Creams of the Crop

Best-rated chocolate and vanilla ice creams (Getty Images)
By ConsumerReports.org

Exotic choices such as Boston Cream Pie (Ben & Jerry's), Birthday Party (Blue Bunny), and Amaretto Almond Crunch (Häagen-Dazs) might turn heads, but vanilla and chocolate are still the nation's favorite ice cream flavors. Our trained tasters tried 13 vanillas and 11 chocolates with various amounts of fat.

Seven rated Excellent, and six of those are Häagen-Dazs or Ben & Jerry's; the seventh is Archer Farms Belgian Chocolate (Target).

Häagen-Dazs Vanilla Bean ($1.13 per ½ cup serving) topped the list of vanillas, for having a big dairy and real vanilla taste. It comes at a price, though, in the amount of 270 calories and 17 grams of fat per serving. Ben & Jerry's Vanilla ($0.97 per serving) and Häagen-Dazs Five Vanilla Bean ($1.13 per serving) took the other vanilla top spots. Ben & Jerry's has 230 calories and 14 grams of fat, while the Five Vanilla Bean has 220 calories and 11 grams of fat.

Among the Excellent chocolates, testers found that Archer Farms Belgian ($0.33 per serving) has an intense, complex chocolate flavor enhanced by bits of dark chocolate. It has 230 calories and 14 grams of fat per serving. Häagen-Dazs Five Milk Chocolate ($1.11 per serving) has 220 calories and 12 grams of fat, while Haagen-Dazs regular chocolate ($1.16 per serving) has 260 categories and 17 grams of fat. Ben & Jerry's ($1.02) has a strong chocolate flavor but is a touch icy, according to testers, and has 250 calories and 14 grams of fat.

Lower-rated ice creams are less creamy and less flavorful, with flaws such as an artificial taste or gumminess. It seems to be harder to make a high-quality vanilla ice cream than a high-quality chocolate. The chocolate flavor might help mask mistakes.

The tastiness of the top-rated products comes at a cost — they're full of calories and fat. And most are pretty pricey, 97 cents to $1.16 per half-cup serving. But Archer Farms costs 33 cents per serving.

Bottom line
For a special treat, try one of the top-rated ice creams. If more healthful fare is your goal, and anything cold and sweet will do, try a light or fat-free ice cream, which has far fewer calories and less fat.

Seperti seorang model Amerika bernama Hope Dworaczyk yang baru saja mendapatkan sebuah BMW S1000RR karena terpilih sebagai Playmate of the Year majalah Playboy.

Which new models were announced at CES 2010? When will they be available?
Just about every major manufacturer announced a 3D television at CES 2010. Here's a rundown on the big models in order of their release:

•Panasonic Viera VT25 Series Plasma (Available now)
Samsung LED8000 Series LCD (Available now)
•LG LX9500 Series LCD (Available in Korea, coming to U.S. in May)
•Sony LX900 Series LCD (Summer 2010)
•Vizio XVT Pro Series LCD (Available in August 2010)
•Toshiba Cell TV ZX900 Series LCD (Fall 2010)

With the exception of Samsung's LED8000 series (which will be trumped by the LED9000 later on), these represent flagship models. Most manufacturers are also offering more stripped down versions at lower price points. Check out 3DMovieList for a comprehensive list of models, release dates and features.

Can I watch 2D video on a 3D TV?
Absolutely. All of the upcoming 3D TV models above represent flagship models from their respective manufacturers, which means they won't just play 2D television, it should look top notch. Nothing about the tech needed to make 3D-capable sacrifices 2D images quality, so even if you intend to watch 99-percent of your programming without glasses, you shouldn't think twice about buying a 3D TV.

Will I absolutely need 3D glasses? How do they work? How much will extra pairs cost?
Every consumer-grade 3D TV today requires glasses to produce a 3D effect. Although many companies have demonstrated tech demos at trade shows that show how 3D can be produced without glasses, none of them are yet ready for prime time.

Unlike movie theaters, which use polarized glasses, 3D TVs use active-shutter LCD glasses. This means a tiny transmitter inside actually communicates with the TV to block your left eye when an image for the right eye is on the screen, and vice versa, 120 times per second. This rapid-fire trickery requires electronics and a small battery, making them heavier and bulkier than the cheap polarized glasses you may have used in a 3D cinema.

Although most 3D TVs will come with one or more pairs of glasses, you should also be prepared to buy additional pairs unless you really plan on sitting in your basement watching Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs all by yourself. Although not all manufacturers have announced pricing for the glasses that will pair with the new models, don't expect them to be cheap. Samsung, which already has 3D displays on the market, charges $130 for a pair of its rather dorky 3D shades. Nvidia charges $149. Even if the TV you buy comes with a two pairs, that's another $260 to get the kids on board, and more if you want to invite the neighbors over to gloat. Make sure to factor the price into your purchase.

What will I be able to watch in 3D?
To be frank, not that much, right off the bat. Although standards for generating and distributing video in 3D have expanded, the market is still pretty slim at the moment.

Your best bet for the time being lies in 3D Blu-ray movies. Manufacturers only recently ratified a 3D standard for Blu-ray, but a few titles are already available. Samsung throws a 3D copy of Monsters vs. Aliens in its Blu-ray starter kit, and Panasonic recently sweetened the deal for its buyers with Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Coraline in 3D with the purchase of any Panasonic 3D TV.

Some TVs, such as Toshiba's ZX900 Cell TVs and Samsung's LED9000, will actually be able to generate 3D content from 2D content as well. Although the artificial 3D effect from this method clearly won't look as good as native 3D (in our demo at CES, it looked a bit like cutouts from a pop-up book, and the rendering tech causes some people to have halos around them), we still think it will be an extremely useful feature while 3D remains immature, and content scarce.

Television stations will start to offer 3D content soon, too. DirecTV will fire up three 3D stations in 2010, ESPN will broadcast select games in 3D, and Sony and IMAX are slated to start their own 3D nature channel. Unfortunately, many of the specifics remain quite vague now, so you may be better off waiting for more information before committing to any one provider.

Do I need a special Blu-ray player for those 3D Blu-ray discs?
Unfortunately, yes. The same companies pushing 3D TVs have committed to producing 3D-capable Blu-ray players this year as well. Here's a quick list:

•Panasonic DMP-BDT350 / BDT300
•Samsung BD-C3900 / C6900
•Sony BDP-S770 / S470
•Toshiba BDX3000
•LG BD580

So far, it doesn't look like any previous Blu-ray players will be upgradable, except Sony's PlayStation 3, which should get a firmware update to make it happen this summer, along with stereoscopic gaming.

What is HDMI 1.4?
At the moment, a certified HMDI 1.4 cable is the only way to carry a 3D signal. That means that your existing HDMI 1.3 cables (which have been the standard since 2006) won't do the job. A new cable isn't much of an upgrade investment, but keep in mind that other HDMI accessories won't work, either, including A/V receivers. If you plan to pass your video signal through a receiver with HDMI, Sony's STR-DN1010 is currently the only model that will fit your needs.

How big of a screen do I need?
You may recall from our HDTV buyer's guide that we dismissed the caveman "bigger is better" mentality when it comes to TVs, favoring one that fits the room instead. Well, grow out your unibrow and grab yourself a club, because the reverse is true with 3D. Let's state this bluntly: You need a big TV to appreciate 3D. Immersion is the name of the game, and the more the screen fills your field of view, the more you feel like you're "there." Fortunately, TV manufacturers seem to realize this as well, since we haven't seen a single 3D set under 42 inches. If you have the extra money to throw at a luxury like 3D TV, make sure to go all the way and buy the largest screen you can reasonably afford or fit in a room, because it will drastically affect your 3D experience.
